She had done it for years.

She paddled.
The sea had become part of her long before she became a midwife. After long shifts bringing new life into the world, the ocean reminded her to breathe again.

The sunrise painted ribbons of gold across the water as dolphins surfaced in the distance. Nerina smiled.

Without hesitation she drew the small knife strapped inside her wetsuit.
The blade rested lightly against his neck.
"Take one more step."
Silence.

A deep voice echoed across the beach.

The Man From the Ocean
They all turned.
A man emerged from the sea.
Not swimming.
Walking.
The water parted around him as though it welcomed him home.
Droplets shimmered across his skin beneath the setting sun.
His eyes never left the men.
"I won't ask again."
One of them laughed.
Big mistake.
Within seconds he was thrown several metres across the sand as if he weighed nothing.
The others scrambled back towards the boat without another word.

For several seconds neither of them spoke.
Finally Nerina broke the silence.
"You picked one dramatic entrance."
The stranger smiled.
"I've been told that before."
"You've been watching me."
"I have."
She folded her arms.
"That's usually the point where I leave."
"I know."
"But I hoped you wouldn't."
Chapter 8
A Secret Older Than Time
His name was Kaelen.
He wasn't a surfer.
Or a diver.
Or anything she'd expected.
"I don't belong to your world," he admitted.
Nerina laughed softly.
"I'd already guessed that."
Then he asked a question that stopped her completely.

Kaelen held out a small shell unlike anything she'd ever seen.
It shimmered with soft blue light.

She hesitated.

Towering palaces of crystal and living coral shimmered beneath the sea.
Waterfalls cascaded through glowing gardens.
Children laughed as dolphins played between elegant archways.
It was the most breathtaking place Nerina had ever seen.
"It's... beautiful," she whispered.
Kaelen smiled.
